But what exactly is hypnosis?   Scientists, doctors and hypnotists have differing opinions on the definition of hypnosis. Here are few to consider.


Dictionary - An artificially induced trance like state resembling sleep characterized by heightened susceptibility to suggestion


The Mayo Clinic - Hypnosis is a trance-like state in which you have heightened focus and concentration. 


The Human Givens theory states - Hypnosis is not a state of consciousness at all; it is any artificial means of accessing the REM state. Thus, hypnosis is a process, separate from the trance state that it induces, and its effects are no longer mysterious because this can account for all phenomena associated with it.


Anyway you define it, when you're in a state of hypnosis, you usually feel calm and relaxed, and become more receptive to suggestions. In the hands of a skilled hypnotist, positive suggestions bypass your conscious mind and go directly into your subconscious.  Because of this, powerful change can take place very quickly.  You begin to notice a difference in your thoughts and feelings immediately after a single productive session.
